  2. hey guys – was kind of wondering if the tutorial looked at all helpful. its a kind of esoteric kind of thing to sculpt but fun….

    i’m wishing i would get these finished up because i’ve got the urge to do jointed skeletal wings next…..

  3. I think you are part mad scientist! I love how much you experiment and stretch what you do. Plus, I love what you come up with. The thing that boggles me is how to get the tension right on all those cords. Also, how will they feed through the arm? Will they end up being the arm elastic, or do they get tied off to a main cord for the arm?
    I will probably not try this, but I can’t wait to see how it all evolves in your marvelously talented hands.

  4. These are amazing, and I am soooo very tempted to try them, but I have polymer clay, and can’t figure out anything that could be ‘bones’ but not melt ;_; I may try to find some good airdry clay soon… well, I really would have to make a doll first! XD

    I would also like to know how to actually attach these to the arm, or however they are supposed to be strung, as Colleen Martin asked. I looked online, and apparently Soom sells jointed hands, which looks much the same as yours, except with only one cord and a removable ball-wrist joint to hook the elaatic onto. I’m not sure if this is how you yourself will do it, so I dearly hope you will post more tutorials! I’ll be checking back regularily =^-^=!

  5. hey Colleen and Noaka — I’ve tried a couple of different ways to connect to the arm – but am still fiddling – haven’t found the best way yet. Part of the problem is that this is paperclay and it isn’t as strong as resin – so the way that Soom does theirs is very different. you could string this hand also with just one string – run it up and down each finger, but i was being lazy. At the moment the wrist ball has a wire that the fingers tie off too, and the ends of the elastic run up the hollow of the arm. But that obviously needs to be done better. I need to figure a good way to make the balls and ridges more precise for the joints… these fingers move ok, but don’t lock in place as well as i want them too — always room for improvement.

    Noaka – the main reason for the pipes in the paperclay is for strength because the paperclay is fragile in this small of pieces – very well baked polymer wouldn’t need the pipes. and you can bake the polymer on bamboo skewers to make it hollow (twist it a couple of times before baking so you know it isn’t stuck to it, then just pop the hollow fingers off the skewer once they are baked)
